Process of Kidney transplant in India:

  • First, the surgeon will make an incision on one side of the lower abdomen.

  • Then the donor's kidney is placed in the abdomen. The blood vessels of the donor's kidney are connected to the arteries and veins of the patient. The ureter of the donor’s kidney is also connected with the bladder of the patient.

  • A siliconized stent is placed inside the donor's kidney to the patient's urinary bladder which is usually removed two weeks after the surgery by a simple method of flexible cystoscopy.

  • A urinary catheter and a drainage tube are also laced which are then removed before getting a discharge from the hospital.

  • Lastly, the abdominal incision is closed by a fine suture or staples.

  • The patient is kept in the hospital for at least 7 days or until his/her recovery.

  • Donor’s kidney is removed by laparoscopy which involves 3-4 holes on one small lower abdominal cut to remove the kidney.

The donor is discharged after 4 days from the hospital after the surgery.
